Founded in 2011, on four rescues.

Yusuf Chudesra had already spent years in lifesaving when he brought four drowning victims back with CPR. That is where Lifesaving Mumbai starts.

Mission

Empower people to prevent and respond.

At Lifesaving Mumbai, our mission is to empower individuals with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to prevent and respond to emergencies, both on land and in water. We are dedicated to fostering a safer, more prepared community through comprehensive training programmes and community outreach initiatives. Our goal is to educate people of all ages and backgrounds in modern lifesaving techniques, first aid resuscitation, water safety, lifesaving and lifeguarding skills.

We strive to make a significant impact by promoting a culture of safety and awareness, reducing the need for emergency rescues through proactive education and preparedness. Our courses are designed to equip participants with the ability to prevent, recognise and respond to emergencies, ensuring they can provide critical care during breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until professional medical help arrives.

Lifesaving Mumbai is committed to excellence in training and community engagement, working closely with partners and stakeholders to enhance safety consciousness and improve overall emergency response capabilities. Together, we can save lives and build a safer, more resilient community.

The story

From an unpopular idea to an international certification.

Founders and inspiration

The company was founded by Mr Yusuf Chudesra, with assistance from Kanchan Mhatre and Uvais Chudesra. Mr Yusuf’s extensive involvement in lifesaving for over 28 years, coupled with his role as Vice President on the NGO panel dedicated to lifesaving, inspired the creation of Lifesaving Mumbai. His remarkable ability to save four drowning victims by performing CPR ignited the passion to establish this life-saving organisation.

Early challenges

In the early days, Lifesaving Mumbai faced significant challenges. The concept of lifesaving was not widely accepted, and people did not fully commit to the cause, believing it was the government’s responsibility. Despite these obstacles, the organisation achieved notable milestones, including affiliation for its certification, government recognition and international affiliations.

Growth and evolution

During the initial years, financial support was a constant struggle. Lifesaving Mumbai started with a small team of dedicated individuals, committed to making a difference despite the financial constraints. Over the years the organisation’s perseverance paid off, as it gradually expanded its network and influence. Its reputation for excellence in training and certification attracted partnerships with like-minded organisations across India. Today the organisation has a robust network of volunteers, trainers and affiliates who share a common goal.

Recognition

One of the organisation’s notable achievements is securing affiliation with the Australian Lifesaving Academy (ALA), a branch of the International Lifesaving Federation (ILS). This affiliation has enabled Lifesaving Mumbai to offer internationally recognised certifications. Additionally, Lifesaving Mumbai has received numerous awards and accolades for its contributions to community safety and public health, acknowledged by government bodies, private organisations and international partners.

Vision

Lifesaving on the curriculum.

Our vision is to train and certify individuals in life-saving techniques, so everyone has the skills to save a life — at home or at work. We aim to expand through partnerships with private, semi-government and government organisations, and to see lifesaving skills built into the educational curriculum, so every individual is equipped with the knowledge and confidence to respond in an emergency.
